Itinerary Day 1
Turning off the Stuart Highway, we travel along the Arnhem Highway passing the major river systems and wetland regions into Kakadu National Park. After crossing the South Alligator River we begin to explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr Rock where we climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries to the lookout for the famous view over surrounding wetlands. We then visit the Bowali Centre with informative displays, and continue to Cooinda to join Kakadu’s fabled Yellow Waters Wetland Cruise to experience the beauty of the Kakadu wetlands. Overnight Cooinda at the Gagudju Lodge Cooinda (LUNCH)
Day 2
Today’s highlights include a fascinating visit with Aboriginal traditional land owners from the East Alligator region of Kakadu, at the Kakadu Culture Camp, spectacular views and pristine freshwater environs. After a short drive from Cooinda to Djarradjin Billabong, meet our hosts and transfer by boat across the beautiful billabong to a secluded bush site, and enjoy learning about the traditional Aboriginal way of life. Hear intriguing stories about Aboriginal history, the language and the interpretation of the seasonal cycles of the bush. Learn a few secrets of the sources and preparation of “bush tucker” and perhaps have a try at throwing a hunting spear. Later in the day, we venture off the beaten track to Barramundi Gorge, where a 2km return walk through paperbark forest leads to a small waterfall and clear plunge pool with the opportunity to swim. This walk is graded moderate with difficult areas requiring some agility in rougher parts of the track.
Late afternoon we make our way out of Kakadu National Park via 4WD track, Old Jim Jim Road. Arrive Darwin mid evening. (CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST, LUNCH)
(In the event seasonal conditions prevent access to Ubirr Rock and/or Barramundi Gorge, the group will visit other attractions such as Nanguluwur, Gubara Pools or Nawulandja.) During December – end of March inclusive, Kakadu Culture Camp is unable to operate due to seasonal conditions, alternative touring to Nourlangie Rock will be included.
